Virpi Kaarakainen appointed as CEO


Virpi Kaarakainen, M.Sc., has started as the CEO of Geobotnia Oy on September 15, 2021. As CEO, she is responsible for the implementation of the company’s strategy and business together with the company’s board and management team.

Virpi has strong experience in demanding geotechnical design and excellent qualifications to lead the company.

Juulia Väisänen’s diploma thesis awarded as the best of the year



The diploma thesis of our designer Juulia Väisänen was awarded as the best geotechnical diploma thesis by Finnish Geotechnical Association SGY yesterday, 5 November 2020.

Juulia did the work as an assignment for Geobotnia Oy and the topic of the work was “Consideration of the flowability of tailings in the geodesign of mining dams”. The dissertation approaches the topic from the point of view of practical design and presents classification maps based on CPTU drilling results, which can be used to assess the run-off susceptibility of tailings and residual shear strength evaluation methods.

Finland’s largest piling project ever


Geobotnia Oy is the geotechnical designer of the reinforced concrete piling in Kemi bioproduct mill project. This is Finland’s largest piling ever.

Project engineering for Metsä Group’s bioproduct mill in Kemi


Geobotnia Oy is responsible for the geotechnical design of the project engineering phase of Metsä Fibre Oy’s bioproduct mill project in Kemi as the project progresses to this phase in August 2020. Since 2019, our company has been responsible for ground investigations and numerous design tasks in this project. Prerequisites for the 1,5 billion euro investment decision are estimated to be fulfilled in the Autumn of 2020 after the environmental permit process is completed.

If completed, the value of the investment will be 1.5 billion euros making the project the largest investment in the history of the Finnish forest industry.

Alliance agreement for the implementation phase of the Lapland Central Hospital extension project


The Lapland Hospital District Municipal Association signed an alliance agreement for the implementation phase of the central hospital extension project in Rovaniemi on Monday. The construction phase of the project will be completed in stages, with completion expected in January 2023. Geobotnia Oy is responsible for the geotechnical design of the project.

The extension project will cost a total of EUR 138 million. The investment will be paid for by 15 members of the Lapland Hospital District.

In addition to Geobotnia Oy, the parties to the alliance agreement are the Hospital District of Lapland, VERSTAS Arkkitehdit Oy, YIT Suomi Oy, Are Oy, Granlund Oy, WSP Finland Oy and L2 Paloturvallisuus Oy.

This is the first alliance-type construction project to be carried out in Lapland.

Metsä Group bioproduct mill in Kemi


Geobotnia was invited to participate in Metsä Group’s bioproduct mill project in Kemi. When implemented, the project is the largest forest industry investment in Finnish history – with a total value of about EUR 1.5 billion. At the moment, ground investigations are done by Geobotnia and will continue during the Summer season 2019. The project will continue with project planning with the aim of making an investment decision and readiness for implementation in 2020.

Stora Enso POOL Project


Geobotnia Oy is the consultant in Stora Enso Oyj’s POOL Project. The project is part of a larger whole, linked to the renewal of production at the Oulu plant in Nuottasaari.

Column penetration tests and column vane shear tests


Geobotnia Oy has added column penetration tests and column vane shear tests to their range of services. The first ones are used to determine the shear strength of a column while the latter ones are used to determine the shear strength of a column at a certain depth.

In addition to these quality control tests, we offer amongst other the following ground and rock investigations:

o   weight sounding tests, dynamic probing tests and static dynamic penetration tests
o   piezocone penetration tests (CPTU), vane tests, pressuremeter tests
o   groundwater standpipe installations in soil and rock as well as water samplings
o   disturbed and undisturbed soil samplings
o   percussion drilling with drill rods or casing pipes
o   core samplings in rock
o   packer tests in rock, rock core sample logging and mineral aggregate tests

Geobotnia Oy designing the biggest wind turbines in the Nordics


Geobotnia Oy is responsible for geotechnical design of TuuliWatti Oy’s Viinamäki wind farm. In addition to geotechnical design, we are responsible for instance ground and bedrock investigations.

There will be five turbines installed in the wind farm. These turbines are as yet the biggest in the Nordic countries. The new wind farm will begin production in 2019.
